3 Tips to Prepare for Winter Driving in the UK
It’s official, fires are being lit all around the country and scarves and gloves are a firm fixture for the season; winter is upon us. As we ready our homes and ourselves for winter, so must we ready our vehicles.
Preparing your car for the winter ahead can help to avoid breakdowns, ensure you have all you need in case of a breakdown and give you peace of mind that your travels will be as safe as you can make them. Here are three tips to help you prepare for winter motoring.
- Top up your breakdown kit
With the colder weather comes icy roads, frosted windscreens, fog and snow – not the most ideal driving conditions. Breaking down in your vehicle is never a good thing but during the winter months it can be more hazardous. The start of the wintry season is a good time to check that your cars’ breakdown kit is up to date and topped up with those essentials. The RAC has some great winter advice to help you be prepared including a handy checklist of what items it’s a good idea to keep in your vehicle in case you breakdown:

2 – Plan your journeys
In the winter time roads can be more hazardous, it’s important to allow extra time for journeys and ensure that where needed you drive in accordance with road conditions. Other drivers will also drive at reduced speeds in heavy rain, fog and snow so be sure to allow for this when planning your trip.
Before setting off on your journey, check you have enough fuel, it’s so easy to overlook and definitely important to avoid running out in dark and freezing conditions.
A vital part of planning your journeys over winter is making sure that your tyres are safe for the trip ahead; weather and temperature can have a big impact on the performance of your tyres. TyreSafe have created a handy list of 7 steps to check your winter tyre safety to help you to reduce the risk of tyre-related incidents when out in wintry conditions.
